I was recently commissioned to create one. Unlike the hybrid Messenger/Backpack I made a while back, the request was to create a more traditional looking backpack.

During my research I stumbled upon traditional Japanese Backpack which is called 'Randoseru'. The styling really resonate with me and decided to use this as an inspiration. Traditional 'Randoseru' was designed to carry a full day's worth of student's items hence the need for the large space. The client however demanded a slimmer version to make it more wearable as well as versatility with different outfit.

I felt that the double closure does not give the right balance for the bag. A single centre closure was selected instead. By having only single closure also makes the bag easier to open and close.

The result is a much more simpler looking bag with better proportion.

After few trials and purchases from different supplier, I'm happy to say that I have found such leathers.

My criteria is simple, high quality. Smooth and supple 'hand', burnished flesh side, rich aroma are some of the characteristic of such leather.

When crafting bags with these coloured leather, special consideration needs to be given in regards to finishing the edge. There are two ways of finishing edges, coating with special paint or hand burnished. I have opted for hand burnished method. I believe this is the only way to finish bags made of vegetable tanned leather. The end result provides rich and three dimensional looking edge that cannot be replicated by just simply painting it.

For now I have chosen Dark Chocolate and Cognac colour to compliment the existing natural veg-tan. There will be more colour coming, I'm still trialling them and will release it once I'm happy with them.

As per our previous design, it emphasise on minimalistic approach.

As per Kimmi, it is entirely handcrafted from Scandinavian vegetable-tanned hides, linen thread and solid aluminium rivets.

With generous space to fit slim 13" laptop plus A4 size documents, it's the perfect companion for business and leisure.

Olki is simple yet sophisticated.
I'm happy to say that the new place will have a separate garage/workshop which will better accomodate the leather-crafting, this means that I can keep working throughout the night without waking up everyone in the house.

We will also carry out minor renovation around the new place which will be infused with leather elements. Hopefully this will enabled us to look at venturing into an exciting area of leather accessory.
If you are a frequent reader of this blog, thank you and we are still here. I understand that there are tons of straps for the band in the world wide web. I wanted this to be unique as well as minimalist in style.

My research suggest that most of the straps in the market are thick (5mm and more), usually double layered and somewhat longer to give that long tail effect. There's also a few that's made of vintage leather which is famously known as 'Ammo Strap'. The execution of the 'Ammo' type really resonate with me. Some of these straps is done minimally to really show the character of the leather which would have begin as a typical vegetable-tanned leather.

Drawing inspiration from this 'Ammo Strap' I proceed to create the strap. Each part of the strap is minimally constructed from one piece of leather, chemical adhesive was excluded from the process. At 4mm it's far from the thickest strap out there, quite the opposite as a matter of fact. This should make the strap very supple and easily conform to the wrist. Since there will be no lining the flesh side is smoothed. I'm very excited to see how the strap will age with use.

I'm also working in tandem to create a line of bags that will form as the brand's initial collection. I'm hoping to get everything done later this year.

In the meantime I have placed 'Under Construction' page on Ped's & Ro website. I'm starting to use the new logo on the website that will trickle down to the bag itself. Please feel free to have a look and drop a comment or two.Reza Ekarantiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07984086483664546752noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2820908425891985646.post-11171315721151328482013-03-29T12:49:00.001+10:002013-03-29T12:49:20.113+10:00Project: Dog CollarThe idea came about after our bubbly husky passed away. I wanted to make something to remember him by and what's better than a customised leather collar. While at it, I also made two collar for my rough collies.

I recycled the hardwares from their existing collar. It's heavy duty and looks very aged which is perfect for the project.

Construction is simple, aluminium rivet and few rows of stitching. To finish it up, I embossed their name on the leather.

As always, some photos of the finished project.

I've always wanted to make myself a belt from a vegetable tanned leather. The opportunity arise after completing Project Messenger/Backpack. I had a scrap cut of perfect length leather suitable for belt. I wanted the belt to be clean and as simple as possible with minimal work done to the leather.

To preserve the thickness appearance I chose to skip the bevelling process, sanding and burnishing the edge smooth is more than sufficient for this purpose. Center bar buckle is chosen so the belt can be worn without keeper. Fastening is done with copper rivet and one line of stitching. Finally to complete the look and increase practicality, I smooth out and burnish the flesh side, this also gives a more uniform look with the edge.

As always, photo of the completed belt:

The
bag is to have a center strap wrap-around with buckle closure. The
strap is removable for carrying both messenger-style and backpack. To
achieve this, I've used square ring on each gusset for messenger style
and D-ring incorporated in the center strap for backpack.
The strap is one very long piece, looping is done with two conway buckle. For comfort, I also built two shoulder pad.
Handle is added for carrying as briefcase and finally Internal divider with two pockets and pen holder is sewn inside the bag.
I decided to turn it into a mini tote instead.

To minimise the weight, I used thinner leather measuring at 2 - 2.5mm. Construction is simpler than the original tote. Rivets is only used for the bottom portion. The handle is one piece of leather and the closure is single instead of double.

The adaptation works extremely well and looks well-proportioned. Size is just a tad smaller than the most famous tablet. It will be plenty of room to carry daily necessities.

I really like the form of the bag, it has enough space to bring essentials for office dweller, i.e: Your lunch, keys, sun-glasses and other loose items. It's also very compact and forgiving to other commuter on the bus or train.

I had that chance last week. First up is to re-jig the sizing, I want the bag to have a slightly different ratio, this will (in my opinion) gives the bag a more appealing form factor, this also makes the bag smaller. Second is handle and closure placement, I want both of them to be more integrated for cleaner look, this is to complement the new leather.

Construction method is very similar to the first model, one long piece for the body and two gusset for the sides, standard for my line of bag. I uses aluminium rivet this time, I hand brush the rivet before fastening it for that worn look. Stitching is done with standard saddle-stitch this time.

There is no shoulder strap or wrap around strap this time. I wanted a clean and simple bag.

As always, some photo of the finished product.
One of them is a leather button. In order for the button to work, the button need to be sturdy enough. One way of achieving this is via a method called 'cuir-bouilli' or boiled leather.

There isn't an exact procedure how to achieve the desirable end product, this is because every vegetable-tanned leather has different tanning composition. By boiling the leather, some or all part of the leather will be polymerised.

The method that I used was first soaking the leather into cold water then pour a boiling water into the leather surface without soaking it. I was hoping to fully polymerise the leather surface only and somewhat half polymerise the inside of the leather.

Few observation:
1. The hot water did what it supposed to do, polymerising the leather
2. There is shrinkage but was less that I expected. The shrinkage occurred on the surface that touch the hot water hence the curve upward shape.
3. The color has changed to dark brown permanently
4. Final result is brittle, can be torn with hands.

I need to experiment or fine-tune the boiling method to prevent the cracking at the end. It's been a fun experiment.

As always, some photos of the experiment:
This is a commissioned piece for a good friend and I want to make sure the standard is high. I made a prototype beforehand to test how the shape and function will work out. I initially encountered some problem with handle placement but was resolved for the end product.

As per my other design, the approach is minimalist and functional. The main body consists of one large panel that made the front, bottom, back and flap and two gusset panels for the sides. The pieces is secured by using aluminium rivets and a single stitching line on each corners.

The handle is made of three different pieces. This is to accentuate the bag and also introducing some signature on my line of bags. The leather pieces for the handles has also been hand oiled and waxed, giving it a different hue from the bag's main body. It works brilliantly in term of aesthetics and function. The different colour tone gives the bag a multidimensional look and the width of the main handle works well when carrying the bag on the shoulder.

It's a well balance bag that looks sturdy and soft at the same time.
It's also the first time I used the new Scandinavian leather. It's an
absolutely beautiful leather to work with which shows at the finished product. I envisioned many derivative
from this versatile design. Stay tuned.
As the rivet is fairly soft, it's actually quite possible to remove them once they are set. This method wouldn't work with solid rivet.

The tools needed is fairly simple:

1) A flat headed screw-driver, with blunt edges
2) A Plier
3) A Pincher tool

Here's the photo to illustrate the steps:

It's a fairly simple process to remove the rivet, it's also one of the reason why this type of rivet is my second preference for fastening leather.Reza Ekarantiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07984086483664546752noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2820908425891985646.post-57598492539951941242012-07-05T13:49:00.001+10:002012-07-12T10:46:12.022+10:00New Leather...I have always admired the way Scandinavian design and produce a product. Their minimalist approach is so refreshing yet functional. It speaks high quality in many ways.

Vegetable-tanned hides coming from Scandinavian tannery is no different. They are regarded as one of the best leather you can get your hands on, partly due to the colder climate (less insect and parasites).

This was confirmed during my visit to Sweden few years back, I discovered one of such tannery. I went to a major department store (PUB) that stocks their own line of bag. I must say, the leather is nothing like I have ever seen, exceptionally smooth, distinct grain growth, super clean and smell really good too.
This tannery is none other than Tarnsjo Garveri.
On another note, their in-store concept is very unique as well. Client is able to view the leather, hardware and even see their product being made. Something that I would definitely entertain in the future.
I have since sent them a request to send me some sample with a view to purchase hides. I do realise though that procuring hides from them this way is going to be an expensive excersize due to the shipping cost.

Fast forward few years, I received a flyer on the mail from one of the biggest leather supply in the world. On the front page it was selling a Premium European leather. The description on the website mentioned Scandinavian hides, I was sold at this stage. This could be my ticket to Scandinavian leather at a reasonable price. I ordered two hides to see how this compare to the Tarnsjo leather. They quite different in character, Tarnsjo has more pronounced grain and different smell, whereas the Tandy one is very very smooth and soft (you can definitely see the grain growth). Pliability is almost the same (exceptional for hide this thick). They even share similar smell, with Tarnsjo being more neutral. I classify both leather in the same class, PREMIUM. I couldn't tell if the leathers come from the same tannery, but I'm not complaining.

How does the leather compare to the locally sourced one? The one that is tanned locally has different characteristic. They reflect Australian outback a lot, rough, rugged and honest. It's a lot stiffer which in turns harder to tool but is less delicate. I wouldn't put them in the same class as the one from European tannery one since there's a lot of inconsistency in quality of the hides (first ordered hide is really good, plenty of smooth, blemish free area. Second and third hide is average). Also, the European one is 'Bend' cut which is back and butt area (the best part), this is all you need for making a project, even-though you get less for your money. Whereas locally source one is a side cut.

I will still keep my option open and always looking out for the next best leather. This alone is a very exciting journey. I've tried taking some photo but this does not capture the beauty of the leather, hopefully word alone is enough to describe it.Reza Ekarantiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07984086483664546752noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2820908425891985646.post-46391899784350689372012-04-17T11:12:00.004+10:002012-04-17T11:16:16.273+10:00Phone Pouch RefurbishmentI was given the opportunity to refurbish one of the earlier phone pouch. The owner used this on daily basis and it's safe to say he gives it a workout. This is the phone pouch in this review.

The pouch has gained what I refer to as 'Dirty Patina'. As opposed to a normal patina, the oxidation has gone through out the leather and turned the leather into a much darker colour than normal, similar to a vinagrooned leather.

The leather itself is in a fairly good condition, no cuts or tear on the surface. It has softened considerably and molded into a particular shape. The edges has been burnished naturally and is very smooth with no visible fraying. I'm quite happy with the leather condition.

The side stitching on the other hand is a mess, this is in line with the fact that natural thread will not resist prolonged abrasion. Only half the pouch still has the stitching intact but to my surprise this still hold the pouch together remarkably well. Stitching on the card pocket is still holding up well with no visible damage, i'm leaving this alone.

So what I did was:
1. Inspecting the pouch to see if there's any considerable damage to the leather.
2. Remove side stitching carefully.
3. Clean leather with saddle soap.
4. Reconditioned inside out using Obenauf Heavy Duty LP
5. Restitch with fresh thread.

It's really good to see one of my product is being used in the real world and actually has the opportunity to inspect it later on. This provides me with an immense knowledge about the leather and the component that is used for constructing the product.

As always some photos of the process:
She wanted a simple 'dumping-bag' for all her work-related items. The bag is fairly large in size for this purpose.

It's constructed using 10oz (4mm) bridle leather in natural colour. Construction method is simple, the main body of the bag consists of three components and is secured with copper rivets on the bottom and each corner of the bag. Stitching is done in natural colour. The handles are made from one long piece leather, secure with two copper rivets on each side. All exposed edges was rounded and smoothed out.

Although it is a very simple bag, stitching the rear portion of the bag was quite a challenge due to the limited space, it had to be done very slowly. I've also shaped the bottom rivet so that it can act as a feet for the bag, this is to reduce the wear on the grain of the leather. The shaping was done with different size riveting tool and finishing up with 'ball and peen' hammer.

Overall, I'm very happy with the way this bag turn out. The uniformity of the material gives the bag minimalist elegant look.

I really am looking forward to see the patina in person on the bag after few months of usage.

At the moment I'm working on a simple Tote bag project, it's designed to be a 'dumping ground' for files and folders. It will be built using 10oz bridle leather in natural colour. Solid copper rivet will be used on the corner for strength. I will also attempt at making legs from the copper rivet with different method of rivet peening.

I'm also collaborating with canvas as raw material. It's still on the early days and I have yet to source the canvas that I have in mind. In my opinion, thick waxed canvas and vegetable tanned leather are made for each other, they complement each other in a very hard to describe ways.

Another project that I'm keen on starting is recycling metal ammo boxes as a bag. I found this metal box rather interesting and intriguing. First, the size, it's perfect to carry around everyday stuff (for the small one at least). Secondly, the durability, it's made from sheet metal, enough to withstand everyday abuse and more. Finally, utility factor, it has rubber gasket on the lid which make the box moisture and dust proof. With a little bit of work, this can be the ultimate camera bag.
Adding few leather bits on the otherwise industrial looking metal box should add some aesthetic and functional value.

Picture of Australian ammo box:

And lastly, I'm hoping to roll out a collection of bags later on this year. I have pretty much decided on the styling and sizes, just need to find the time to make them all!Reza Ekarantiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07984086483664546752noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2820908425891985646.post-76695151704382834242011-12-28T23:04:00.001+10:002011-12-28T23:05:25.136+10:00Project: Gadget BagI commissioned this bag for myself to carry all the gadgets I own, from an Ipad to a DSLR camera with its accessories. I used the leftover leather from Project: Messenger Bag.

Naturally, all the best part from the hide has been used, what's left is some shoulder and lots of belly part. I don't normally like working with the belly since it tends to have a fuzzy underside and is the least dense part of the hide (stretchy and thin). Fortunately, it's a 4mm thick leather, so stretching is not going to be a major issue and the fuzziness can be smooth out with the trusty sanding block plus some elbow grease. Also, this belly has tons of character!! It's a shame if it goes to waste.

Construction method is similar to to the Messenger bag with the exception of the shoulder strap placement. Instead of attaching it to the side of the bag, it's integrated into the wrap around strap and is removable. I also included a divider, complete with a small pocket, a card holder and provisions to attach camera lens pouches (which I made specifically for the camera and the bag). The space behind the divider can be lined with some foam for extra protection.

I used nickel coloured brass rivet supplemented by solid aluminum rivet wherever possible for added strength. Stitching is done in red to give the bag extra character.

The shoulder strap is simple and constructed from 3 pieces of leather secured with solid aluminium rivet. It is attached with a Conway buckle on each side to give the bag an extra clean look and is easily adjustable on the attaching point. The strap turns out to be shorter than I would like it to be. It wears fine with the furthest adjustment hole but can do with extra length.

Overall, I absolutely love the way the bag turns out, the size is perfect. The proportion is spot on, it has that cute chubby look to it. The marking on the leather really give the bag it's character. I did notice that the stitching on the lid of the bag need to be redone. I think I'm going to use a totally different colour thread when redoing the stitches to further experiment with colour. In the meantime, I'll be using this bag for my daily duty which is a good way to develop patinas on the leather.

As always, some photo of the built process and completed bag:
He has ordered this beautiful aluminium folio for his presentation. He wanted something different to set it apart from the other student's folios.

After a number of exchanged emails and a visit to my workshop, a black coloured leather with white stitching was decided. This is to reflect his portfolio which has a black & white theme. An internal pocket, wrap-around strap and a removable handle will also be added to the folio for a more distinct look.

Originally I had planned to use 1.5mm tooling leather for the cover body. To achieve the black colour it would receive a full strength vinegaroon treatment. Unfortunately, due to the acidic solution, the grain on the leather tightened, as a result the leather pieces shrunk. It shrunk by about 2mm, enough to make the pieces unusable. At this stage I decided to use different leather all together.

I settled for a waxed vegetable tanned leather, it's been coloured black from the tannery, which is a bonus. It's slightly thicker at 2.5mm. The texture and thickness is perfect for the theme of the folio.

The strapping is build using the 4mm leather I bought earlier for Project Messenger. These also received full strength Vinegaroon treatment. No noticeable shrinkage with this pieces. The thickness really complement the overall look.

The final product is fantastic, I couldn't be any happier so does Hamish. It really gives the folio that extra appeal.

It's been an amazing experience building the cover for someone as talented as Hamish and pulling an all- nighter to meet the deadline for the folio is an awesome experience.

I'm looking forward for more collaboration with Hamish in the future.
Bad and out of focus photo in this blog will be a history! The camera was supplied with a decent neck strap, it's good for hanging the camera around the neck but I much prefer to have the camera on my hand hence the preference for a wrist strap. The supplied strap is definitely too long to be a proper and comfortable wrist strap.

I decided to build myself a leather wrist strap for the camera. The leather will need to be thick to match the largish camera body, decided to use the 4mm Bridle leather. I was, at one point, undecided between buckle or string/thread attachment, but decided to go with string for simpler look albeit the safety aspect that the buckle will provide. For strength I use 6 ply linen thread, the thicker thread also gives a robust visual.

At this stage I'm still researching for the best string/thread to use for the wrist strap. I'm not fully convinced with linen thread, while it has a strong breaking point, due to it being a natural thread, it doesn't resist abrasion like a synthetic thread does. More on this later.

I was approached by Michael via email to build him a Messenger bag. He explained to me his great interest in Vegetable Tanned leather and must have a bag made from this leather. He liked the look of the Laptop Bag prototype and wanted a similar style for the messenger bag that he has envisioned. He's quite particular on the style and even drew sketches using a computer program which is fantastic! After many exchanges of emails, we finally settled on the design, dimensions and other details.

The bag is constructed from 4mm (10oz) bark tanned bridle leather. I procured the leather from a tannery located in the Ballarat region of Victoria. The tannery supplied the leather during gold rush in the area back in 1800s. The leather itself is beautiful, lots of character showing in the leather. It has a slightly different tint from the other vegetable-tanned leather I have bought before, possibly due to the differences in tanning material. It's a tough leather to cut but also very supple and easily mold-able. It's the perfect foundation for the project.

The bag is to have two internal pockets with closure and a couple of pen holders. To retain the 'cleanliness' look on the exterior of the bag, a divider is utilised for the pockets and pen holders. Other than the divider, the bag's interior is raw.

As per the laptop bag prototype, a wrap around straps with handle is also incorporated into the design. We decided to do without buckles, a stud closure is used instead. A buckle however is used for the shoulder straps, which is attached on the side of the bag.

Double cap rivets is placed strategically throughout the bag for durability and longevity purpose. They will also help preserve the stitching thread from excessive wear.

It has been a rich experience with this project from start to finish. Learned new techniques that I never imagined could work. The bag itself is fantastic, the thick leather gives the bag real structure and presence. It has the casual tone of a messenger bag and the formality of a briefcase. I would love to see the patina developed in this bag.

It was sad to see the bag packed up and sent away. I would proudly wear it as my daily bag, however it's destined to be with it's deserving owner.

As always, photos of the completed bag:
